Authorities in the French Alps have reportedly discovered an official Vatican car, complete with diplomatic plates, stuffed with several kilos of cocaine and cannabis.
The car is registered to 91-year-old Jorge Maria Mejia, a cardinal from Argentina, who is a senior librarian at the Vatican.
The elderly cardinal is not suspected of any involvement, as he has been bed ridden since suffering from a heart attack last year.
French newspaper Le Monde reports that the car was left with two Italian men for its annual service.
Instead, the pair drove it to Spain and purchased four kilos of cocaine, and a further 200 grams of cannabis. The duo then drove through France, in the hope of avoiding customs and police attention with their diplomatic registry plates.
Their car was stopped as part of a routine customs check in Chambery, near the Swiss and Italian borders, where the men’s drugs were found.
The two Italian men have now facing drug trafficking charges as police in Lyon continue their investigation.
Le Monde reports that because they men had no diplomatic passports, the investigation is not expected to lead back to the Vatican.
