The 2013 annual Comic-Con International begins today in San Diego.

Now in its 44th year, the San Diego Comic-Con isn't your regular comic book convention.

The world-famous event is commonly attended by world famous actors promoting upcoming films and TV shows like The Avengers and Breaking Bad.

There are panels where attendees can ask their favourite directors, producers and actors questions and receive exclusive news and information.

But there's so, so much more to Comic-Con than that.

Here are 7 reasons we're excited about this year's convention.

The costumes

Comic-Con is one of the only places where grown men and women can dress up as their favourite characters without getting pointed and stared at. Actually, they still get pointed and stared at, but usually because everyone thinks they're really cool. Here are some of our favourites from last year's convention.

Yes, this is a female Doctor Who...

...and an elderly Green Hornet...

...and a double-chinned Pee Wee Herman...

...and a family of Super-people...

...and we'll just leave this here.

We might get a new clip from Kick Ass 2

We loved the first Kick Ass, and were thrilled to hear than the sequel, due this August, focuses more closely on the simply awesome Hit Girl played by Chloe Moretz. The cast is due to appear at a panel but we still don't what new stuff they're going to show us. Either way, we're excited.

New information on the Breaking Bad spinoff

If you've yet to watch the utter brilliance that is Breaking Bad, please rectify that immediately. The cast and crew from the show will make their last appearance at this year's convention ahead of the final season which premieres next month. But creator Vince Gilligan has said he's planning a spinoff with Bon Odenkirk's character Saul Goodman, the crook attorney who somehow manages to save Walter and Jesse's asses from the law several times throughout the course of the show. We're hoping he'll make an official annoucement at the Breaking Bad panel on Sunday.

All of the deadly merchandise

Not that we could ever afford any of it, or be shameless enough to wear it or hang it up on our wall, but you have to admit that some of the merchandise is pretty cool. Take a look:

We'll finally get to see the fruits of the Veronica Mars movie's $5m Kickstarter

After Warner Bros. cancelled murder mystery TV series Veronica Mars back in 2007, creator Rob Thomas wrote a film script. Warner Bros. didn't want it so Thomas started a fund on crowdsourcing website Kickstarter and asked fans of the show for donations to get it made. It ended up being the most successful Kickstarter ever, meeting its $2 million goal in less than a day. It went on to reach more than $5 million with 90,000 donators. The panel tomorrow will be Thomas' best opportunity to share the first trailer for the film. For the fans' sake we really, really hope it's not terrible.

New footage from the Ender's Game film

We've already had a trailer for this Autumn's long-awaited adaptation to Orson Scott Card's 1985 sci-fi classic, but there's a good possibility we'll get more new footage at the Ender's Game panel today, headed by Harrison Ford who plays Col. Hyrum Graff.

Joss Whedon

The director of last year's mega-hit The Avengers and creator of classic shows like Buffy and the short-lived Firefly is set to show his face at this year's convention, but only at a panel for his comic book label Dark Horse. There'll be no panel for The Avengers 2, which is still in production and isn't set for release until 2015. That said, good luck being asked any questions besides ones about The Avengers, Whedon.
