40% increase in number of building projects recorded in first eight months of 2014

The first eight months of this year year saw a 40% jump in the number of residential building projects getting off the ground.

Planning applications were also up by 12% for the same period, according to figures released today from the National Housing Construction Index and compiled by Link2Plans.

Monaghan, Cork, Westmeath, Donegal and Sligo saw the highest increases in construction starts.

Project commencements fell in three counties - Longford, Roscommon and Leitrim, although it is stressed that "when compared to the same period in 2013, this amounted to nine less project commencements in total for the three counties."

Overall, the number of projects getting off the ground in Ireland rose from 3,510 in the first eight months of 2013 to 4,928 in the same period of 2014.

Spokesman Danny O'Shea says although the growth is coming on the back of a low base, it is a positive sign:
